When I lived in Houston, I used to spread cedar shavings around the house to deter entry by bugs and caches in the closets and cupboards of rosemary and cedar shavings.

Ok first of all I am so relieved to hear that someone else has issues with bugs! I keep a pretty clean house and they seem to come out of no where, very frustrating. I did not have this issue where we used to live...it must be Houston! I have heard great things about diatomaceous earth. I have not tried it yet, but plan to.

Boric acid or Borax sprinkled where roaches go...the sides and back of the fridge and stove...in the corners of cabinets, etc. Mix a little cornmeal in to attract the critters as well. Corn meal swells and they literally explode.

For the ants, mix 1 tsp honey with 2/3 tsp of borax and put in a small lid where you have seen the ants.

Seriously, though, it's Houston. Tropical humidity. You gotta have pest control. A good one will guarantee service for 3 months at only fifty bucks. Send me an email and I'll give you the number for mine (I'm in Houston too).

Try Borax or boric acid. Both are non-toxic and should help keep the pests out!

My sister uses something called Tarro (not sure of the spelling, but I think that is it.) It isn't harmful. She swears by it.

Good luck!
